🧭 Joseph Banks
Naturalist Joseph Banks came ashore at Bustard Bay with the Endeavour expedition in May 1770. While water supplies were replenished, he collected plants behind the beach and noted palms as evidence of the expedition’s arrival in the tropics. His journal also recorded an enthusiastic verdict on the bustard eaten by the party, the bird from which Cook named the bay. The district was already Gooreng Gooreng Country. Banks’s association is this brief but documented collecting visit, remembered in Joseph Banks Conservation Park.
